Interview with Gao Xingsuo

Ahead of his presentation at Eurocoke this September, we spoke to Gao Xingsua to get an exclusive preview of his presentation on 'The latest coke making technologies and carbon reduction route of China', and to get insights into what he thinks are the key industry challenges for 2023 and 2024.

Gao-Xingsua

Could you please share with us an overview of what your presentation – ‘The latest coke making technologies and carbon reduction route of China - will cover?

Up until the end of 2022, there were more than 350 enterprises for coke making, and the coke yield reached 473 million tons in China. Under the background of peak carbon dioxide emission in 2025 and carbon neutrality in 2060, the status, existing problems, and development path of China's coking industry are discussed in my presentation.

What do you see as the key challenges for the industry in 2023/2024?

Although the COVID-19 emergency is over, it may not be such a short time to recover from the economic impact. Consumer demand is weaker now than before the pandemic and in my opinion, the globally depressed economy is the key challenge for the coke-making industry.

What would be the top three market trends in Coke and Coal?

The demand for Coke appears to be stable but in China it appears to be trending downwards. For the development of the cokemaking industry, circular economy solutions will be the main focus in China.

What are you looking forward to at this year's Eurocoke Summit?

I am looking forward to knowing the information on the latest technical developments for the cokemaking industry in different countries or areas.

Why do you feel it is important for people to attend the Eurocoke Summit this year?

This will be the third time that I have attended the summit. I think it is a high-level and efficient meeting not only on for market updates but also on the technology side of things in the coke and coal industry. For those attending, it’s very good for broadening your horizons and views.

Gao Xingsua will be speaking at 9am on Day 2/Session 3: Cokemaking technologies & innovative processes

The latest coke making technologies and carbon reduction route of China

  • The coke yield in China reached 473 million ton in 2022, which is about 70% of the world’s total output
  • The large coke capacity in China has been backed up by advanced plant-wide cokemaking technologies, including the solutions for coal handling system, large-capacity coke oven battery, environment-friendly quenching and customized gas purification system etc.
  • With the drive of low-carbon policies, a series of energy saving technologies have been adopted in the industry, including energy saving refractory design, CDQ, automatic heating and waste heat recovery technologies for ascension pipe and waste flue gas etc
